What we assumed
  • This is highway fuel only. Tolls, food, lodging, and extra city driving are left out.
  • An EIA weekly average is not the price at a specific station. Type a pump price if you have one.
  • Real MPG changes with speed, weather, hills, and the vehicle load.

Guide

Fuel cost for the miles you drive

Distance ÷ MPG × dollars per gallon. The gallon price starts as an EIA weekly regular-gas average for a state or PADD region, unless you type a pump price.

Geography of the gas price

Some states have their own weekly average in the snapshot. Others inherit a PADD regional average. California and Texas often differ by more than a dollar. A trip that crosses regions is still one price unless you split the drive.

Questions about this calculator

Is highway MPG or city MPG the right input?

Use the MPG you expect on that trip. EPA combined is a compromise and often optimistic on a loaded car in hills.

Terms used here

PADD
Petroleum Administration for Defense District, EIA’s regional grouping for some gasoline series.

Practical tips

  • Type the pump price from the start of the trip if you already know it.
  • Tolls, food, and lodging are not fuel. Do not treat this as a full trip budget.

Limits and caveats

  • Fuel only, at an average or a price you typed. Not a routing app.

Engine notes

Rounding, versioning, and omissions that sit beside the guide rather than repeating it.

  • Gallons. Trip miles divided by the MPG you enter. That is highway fuel, not a full travel budget.
  • A price from EIA, or yours. The default is the EIA weekly regular average for your state or PADD region as of Aug 31, 2026. A pump price you type replaces it.
  • Cost per mile. Fuel cost divided by miles. It ignores lodging, food, and extra city driving.
