  2. Total hours8 h
What we assumed
  • If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as overnight and crosses midnight.
  • Unpaid break is subtracted from elapsed time. Overtime law is not applied.
  • No pay is estimated unless you enter an hourly rate. This is hours worked, not a wage claim.

Guide

Hours worked after unpaid breaks

Start, end, and unpaid break across one or more days, including overnight shifts. Overtime law, rounding rules, and meal-penalty statutes are not applied.

Overnight shifts

A shift that starts at 10 p.m. and ends at 6 a.m. is eight hours minus break, not a negative duration. The engine treats that as a crossing of midnight.

Questions about this calculator

Does this calculate overtime at 1.5×?

No. It totals hours. Whether those hours are overtime is a wage-and-hour question this page does not answer.

Terms used here

Unpaid break
Time subtracted from the shift. Paid breaks should be left at zero.

Practical tips

  • Use the hourly-to-salary page if you then need gross pay from those hours.

Limits and caveats

  • Exact time arithmetic. Not a payroll determination and not legal advice.

Results are for information. They are not legal, tax, medical, or financial advice. How the math is maintained · Report a wrong figure.

Engine notes

Rounding, versioning, and omissions that sit beside the guide rather than repeating it.

  • Elapsed time. Each shift is end minus start. If end is not later than start, the shift is treated as overnight and 24 hours are added.
  • Breaks. Unpaid break minutes are subtracted. A break longer than the shift is rejected.
  • Pay is optional. If you type an hourly rate, hours × rate is shown as a simple product. No FLSA overtime, premiums, or legal “owed” language.

What each number here is

This answer is arithmetic on what you enter. No outside dataset is involved, so nothing here can go out of date.

A timesheet total is the sum of the shifts entered.
