What we assumed
  • This is a formula-based estimate for adults, not a diagnosis or medical advice.
  • Population-level equations can be a poor fit for children, pregnancy, elite athletes, and some clinical populations.
  • Talk with a clinician before using a number like this to make a health decision.
  • Adult BMI category labels, if shown, are CDC screening ranges for ages 20+ and are secondary to the number.
  • This page does not calculate child or teen BMI percentiles.

Guide

Adult BMI as a screening ratio, not a diagnosis

BMI is weight divided by height squared, then labeled with CDC adult category ranges. Those labels are secondary screening cutoffs. They are not a diagnosis, not body composition, and not a fitness score.

Who the adult formula misreads

Athletes with high muscle mass, some older adults, and people who are pregnant are poorly described by BMI. The engine still computes the ratio if you enter height and weight; the category is still not a clinical finding.

Questions about this calculator

Is a BMI of 24 “healthy”?

It falls in the CDC adult “healthy weight” range used as a label on this page. That is not a medical clearance and not an assessment of diet or disease risk for you.

Can I use this for a child?

No. Pediatric BMI uses age- and sex-specific percentiles, which this adult formula does not apply.

Does BMI measure body fat?

No. It is a height-to-weight ratio. Two people with the same BMI can have very different fat and muscle. The body-fat calculator is a different, still imperfect, circumference estimate.

Practical tips

  • Use the same units consistently, or let the page convert.
  • Body-fat and BMR pages answer different questions; BMI will not substitute for them.

Limits and caveats

  • Published adult formula, not a measurement or medical advice. Not for children.

Engine notes

Rounding, versioning, and omissions that sit beside the guide rather than repeating it.

  • The ratio. BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. U.S. inputs convert with exact pound and inch constants before that step.
  • Adult ranges only. If a category label appears, it is a CDC adult screening range for ages 20 and older. It sits under the number, not in place of it.
  • What this is not. This page does not calculate child BMI percentiles, prescribe weight change, or replace clinical judgment.

What each number here is

This answer is arithmetic on what you enter. No outside dataset is involved, so nothing here can go out of date.

BMI is weight ÷ height², a published formula rather than a dataset.
