This equation is an adult estimate. It is not appropriate as a stand-alone number for children, pregnancy, or clinical care.

What we assumed
  • This is a formula-based estimate for adults, not a diagnosis or medical advice.
  • Population-level equations can be a poor fit for children, pregnancy, elite athletes, and some clinical populations.
  • Talk with a clinician before using a number like this to make a health decision.
  • Estimated BMR uses the Mifflin–St Jeor equation for adults. It is not a measured metabolic rate.

Guide

Mifflin–St Jeor BMR, not a metabolic cart

Basal metabolic rate is estimated with the Mifflin–St Jeor equation from age, sex, height, and weight. It is an estimate of resting energy use, not a lab measurement.

Why equations disagree

Harris-Benedict, Katch-McArdle, and Mifflin–St Jeor were fitted on different samples. This site uses Mifflin–St Jeor and says so. Thyroid disease, fever, and some medications can move real BMR a long way from any equation.

Questions about this calculator

Is BMR the same as TDEE?

No. TDEE multiplies BMR by an activity factor. BMR is the resting piece only.

Why does this use Mifflin–St Jeor?

It is a widely cited adult equation and the one this engine is tested against. Other equations exist. The page will not switch formulas silently.

Should I eat only my BMR?

No. BMR is a resting estimate. Eating at BMR for days is not a plan this site offers, and it is not medical advice.

Practical tips

  • If you have a measured RMR from a clinic, prefer that number over this estimate.

Limits and caveats

  • Formula estimate, not medical advice, not a diagnosis, not a meal plan.

Results are for information. They are not legal, tax, medical, or financial advice. How the math is maintained · Report a wrong figure.

Engine notes

Rounding, versioning, and omissions that sit beside the guide rather than repeating it.

  • Mifflin–St Jeor. Male: 10×kg + 6.25×cm − 5×age + 5. Female: the same base minus 161. Age is limited to adults 18–80 on this page.
  • Activity stays out. This screen does not multiply by an activity factor. That is the TDEE calculator.
  • Limits. The equation is a poor fit for children, pregnancy, and many clinical populations. It is an estimate only.

What each number here is

This answer is arithmetic on what you enter. No outside dataset is involved, so nothing here can go out of date.

BMR is the Mifflin–St Jeor equation applied to the inputs.
