Guide

Simple interest, with no compounding

Interest = principal × annual rate × time in years. There is no compounding and no recurring deposit. For those, use compound interest or the CD calculator.

When simple interest is the right tool

Some short-term notes and classroom problems are defined as simple interest. A savings account that advertises APY is not simple interest. If you are not sure, the product’s disclosure is the authority, not this page.

Questions about this calculator

Why is this lower than compound interest?

Simple interest never earns interest on interest. Over several years that gap grows.

Terms used here

Simple interest
Principal × rate × time. The principal never changes in the formula.

Practical tips

  • Keep time in years (18 months is 1.5, not 18).

Limits and caveats

  • Exact for the formula. Not a loan amortization and not a savings APY.

Engine notes

Rounding, versioning, and omissions that sit beside the guide rather than repeating it.

  • Simple interest. Interest = principal × annual rate × time. $10,000 × 5% × 3 years = $1,500 interest and $11,500 total.
  • No compounding. The balance does not earn interest on interest here. Recurring deposits belong on the Investment Calculator.
  • Rate meaning. The rate is a nominal annual simple-interest rate, not APY and not a loan APR with fees.
